Portfolio/ reflection
This semester has been unique to say the least, compared to other semesters this semester has taught both professors and students alike a different way of teaching and learning. With these unforeseen events, My writing journey has improved in some aspects and in others still need improvement. While there may have been various learning outcomes my ability to grasp them all has not been likely. For example in this semester I have personally struggled with strengthening my source practice. However apart from this struggle I have been able to gain strength in my data bases usage as well as being able to use appropriate language with the appropriate audience, which has allowed me as an author to have a relationship with my audience.
As mentioned one of my struggles has been being able to strengthen source practice, this includes being able to evaluate, paraphrase and summarize as well as analyze others work. For example in my Public awareness campaign I struggled with being able to correctly source my sources and this has led to accidental plagiarism. In my public awareness campaign I used an image that fit very well into the message that I was trying to spread, this source was backed up by scientific facts however since I did not source it and I did not give credit where credit was due this created accidental plagiarism. After being given a second chance by my professor I was able to correct my mistake however this just shows something that I have struggled with throughout my writing journey.
Throughout this writing journey I have also been able to improve on some of my skills this includes being able to use data bases correctly. For example as mentioned in my discussion, I stated “The learning outcome in which I think I may I had improved on would be my researching skills. While I may have already known about the CUNY databases, I didn’t know the correct way to use them” (discussion 15). Well I was just briefly introduced to them I did not know the correct way to use them. However in this semester I have been able to use those databases given to me and been able to find useful and reliable sources for my research.
In addition to be able to use the data bases to find adequate sources I have also learned how to use the sources to my advantage. I have been able to see whether these sources have been useful for my research using certain techniques taught in class as mentioned in my discussion I have learned to read the introduction and a conclusion of the source before Reading anything else this has allowed for me to save my time to find sources that are useful for my research.
Lastly another improvement I have done has been able to form is a connection from author to audience I have done this by using appropriate language that with the appropriate audience. For example in my public awareness campaign I was able to use appropriate language as my goal was to educate teens young adults and adults about the situation of how social media affects mental health.
In conclusion while I have struggled in some aspects of my writing journey such as my source practice, I have also been able to improved in others such as my database usage and connection with my audience.
